Healthwatch : New Independent Watchdog For Health And Social Care

March 7, 2013
By
east-riding-council

A new independent organisation which will give East Riding residents a voice on health and social care will be launched on 1 April 2013. Healthwatch is being introduced by the Government at both national and local level, with Healthwatch East Riding of Yorkshire becoming the local champion for adults, children and young people. The new organisation is aimed at giving patients and the public a real say over how their local health and social care services are run. East Riding of Yorkshire Council has awarded the contract for the new organisation to Meeting New Horizons, a community interest company owned by Hull Council for Voluntary Services. Healthwatch will be independent of the council and the NHS, replacing services currently provided by the East Riding of Yorkshire Local Involvement Network (ERYLINk) which scrutinises health and social care services on behalf of the public. The local Healthwatch will build on the excellent work of ERYLINk and discussions are taking place with their lead members to encourage and support ongoing involvement of their contribution in the new organisation. Healthwatch East Riding of Yorkshire will give residents and communities a stronger voice to influence and challenge how these services are provided within their local [...]

January 16, 2013

Clinical Research do you want to take part in it and help change the future of medicine? Clinical Research is at the forefront of all medicinal development. Who is working on a cure from Cancer to Diabetes to (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) PCOS? Researchers from all over the world! One thing that makes this possible is people who participate in clinical trials. Patients and participants are not always aware of clinical trials that are ongoing or the fact that certain clinical trials are recruiting. “A 2012 consumer poll showed that 82% of patients of surveyed believed it is important for the NHS to offer patients opportunities to take part in clinical research [Source: One Poll]” “95% of cancer patients who participated in a discussion about clinical research were glad to have been asked, whilst 53% of those who were not asked about research would have liked to have been (2012 National Cancer Patient Survey)”. According to a research mystery shopping article written by the Department of Health, when a receptionist was asked by a potential patient about clinical trials in their area 46% did not know. Although the recruitment figure has nearly tripled since 2007 clinical trials are still in need of recruits for participants. A wide range of help and advice is available to those seeking treatment over Christmas and the New Year, ensuring local urgent care services are kept free for genuine emergencies. These include: • Self-care • NHS Choices • NHS Direct • Pharmacies • Your own GP • Minor injuries units • Walk in centres • GP Out of Hours Service • Emergency dental service Dr Gina Palumbo, East Riding of Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: “We can all play a part in making sure GP surgeries as well as emergency services such as A&E and 999 are free so that vulnerable people who need emergency treatment are seen and treated as quickly as possible. “Whilst the Emergency Department may seem an easy solution, you can be seen and treated much more quickly by choosing the right place for your particular case.
